Libertarian author and activist, Dr. Mary J. Ruwart, will take part in a lecture at Brown University, in Providence, Rhode Island during the fall semester. The event is a part of the Janus Forum Lecture Series.
The Janus Forum is a campus initiative to encourage, facilitate, and develop active thought, debate, and discussion around political ideas at Brown. The Janus Forum seeks to actively promote critical thinking and discourse by exposing students to a variety of perspectives regarding relevant social and political issues.
The event is to take place on Thursday, October 8th, 2009. The lecture is titled, “Corporate Social Responsibility in the Pharmaceutical Industry”. Marcia Angell will also speak. She will be providing an opposite viewpoint to Dr. Ruwart’s presentation.
Dr. Mary J. Ruwart received her B.S. in biochemistry in 1970 and her Ph.D. in Biophysics in 1974 (both from Michigan State University). She then joined the Department of Surgery at St. Louis University where she became an Assistant Professor. Dr. Ruwart came to The Upjohn Company of Kalamazoo, Michigan in 1976 as a Senior Research Scientist involved in developing new therapies for a variety of diseases, including AIDS.
Dr. Ruwart left Upjohn in 1995 to devote her time to consulting and writing. With her husband, Raymond R. Carr, R.Ph., Dr. Ruwart designed and delivered a communications course for scientists, covering written, oral, and poster presentations. She also provides consulting services for nutraceutical companies, CROs, and IRBs.

Drone strikes into Pakistan. Old women on a bus? “Acceptable collateral damage” in Iraq. Flip-flopping on the release of torture photos? Yes, Obama, your moral authority has been surrendered."

Libertarians And Foreign Policy...
"It is amazing how dangerously radical it has become to truly support the Constitution. Libertarians, in political parties and outside of parties, should be able to publicly and proudly envangelize the Constitution. Liberty's Only Real Hope...

But the bottom line is that most of the ever-growing number of people who are coming to libertarianism through the likes of Ron Paul and Tom Woods are sound on the essentials, including the fundamental issues of money, war, and the police state. They are embracing a real alternative to the status quo, not conservatism-lite or liberalism-lite, and for that reason they are liberty's only real hope.

Ron Paul On Water Boarding And The Rule Of Law
Ron Paul on water boarding...
"Enhanced interrogation" as some prefer to call it, has been used throughout history, usually by despotic governments, to cruelly punish or to extract politically useful statements from prisoners. Governments that do these things invariably bring shame on themselves.
In addition, information obtained under duress is incredibly unreliable, which is why it is not admissible in a court of law. Legally valid information is freely given by someone of sound mind and body. Someone in excruciating pain, or brought close to death by some horrific procedure is not in any state of mind to give reliable information, and certainly no actions should be taken solely based upon it.
For these reasons, it is illegal in the United States and illegal under Geneva Conventions. Simulated drowning, or water boarding, was not considered an exception to these laws when it was used by the Japanese against US soldiers in World War II. In fact, we hanged Japanese officers for war crimes in 1945 for water boarding. Its status as torture has already been decided by our own courts under this precedent. To look the other way now, when Americans do it, is the very definition of hypocrisy.

Magic Bubbles...

Sometimes I wish our overlords would get their stories straight. First, Alan Greenspan – whom the New York Times once described, in its typical toadying, totalitarian fashion, as "the infallible maestro of our financial system" – told us it was impossible to tell if a bubble existed at any given time. Now we have Barack Obama insisting that not only can we detect bubbles, but we can also deflate them with sufficient dispatch to prevent them from causing any serious economic disturbances.
